Where did the name of CRASH+SUES come from?
What’s in a name? A lot of history! In 1989 Tom Gilman, Tom Lecher, and Gary (“Crash”) Medin decided to open a video post-production facility. At the time, they all worked at City Post, Inc., an offline video editing company that worked on TV commercials and that also included Echo Boys Music & Sound Design. Heidi Habben, the receptionist at the time, now owns the company! I was working at Northwest Teleproductions as a colorist where Crash had worked up until the previous year. Tom and Crash approached me and asked me to be the colorist at the new facility. Of course I said “yes!”
Seven months later, after finding space, completing the build-out, and purchasing equipment, we were up and running. We kept the business separate from City Post as we wanted other offline companies like Edit WG, Film Cutter, Editronics, and Silk Purse to still work with us. During that time we tried to think of a name for the facility. Minneapolis Finishing Company was a top contender at the time. The problem was that some people loved it and some people hated it. After exhausting our possibilities, Tom Lecher finally said, “Why don’t you just call it Crash & Sue’s since that’s who the clients are coming to see?” (And client’s were already just saying “We are finishing at Crash and Sue’s place”) By that time, Crash and I were like “fine, fine” and that was that. (It could have been Gary and Carol’s as those are actually our first names!) We opened Crash & Sue’s on June 4, 1990.
The name was quite the curiosity at first. We had people calling and asking if we were a law firm specializing in auto accidents or Carson’s Shoes. Over the years, some people thought that Crash and I were married! That would give us a laugh. (That would have made Steve Medin, who worked for CRASH+SUES and now co-owner of Volt, my son! Crazy!)
Another question Crash, now retired, was repeatedly asked was how he got his name. He was always embarrassed to answer but it came after he took a few liberties behind the wheel in New York City to get his crew to a shoot on time! Hardly anyone in the business knew him by his first name and it always took a moment to register who his wife wanted when she called asking for Gary!
Now you know all of our secrets! We’ve gone through a few C+S logo’s and dropped the “&” and “ ‘n” but the name CRASH+SUES has served us well.
