Video Editors: Stretch Yourselves!
I’m not physically flexible. I often amuse myself when I’m unintentionally reminded of how inflexible I am. However, during the rare times when I do stretch, I immediately see the benefits. I start off feeling rigid and statue-like and after a good stretch I feel looser and more nimble. It’s refreshing. The same can be said for any creative process. For me, it’s video editing.
I’ve been editing videos for a while now, but I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ve only scratched the surface of what I hope to learn. Sure, I could stay in my nice, little, comfortable bubble, continuing to only use the techniques that I’m familiar with. Things would probably be fine. But I don’t want to settle with just “fine”. So, in order to really learn and grow I need to stretch myself.
Stretching isn’t always pleasant. You push your muscles beyond their happy limits for an uncomfortable amount of time. Sometimes it’s painful. However, when it’s all said and done, you’re better off than you were before. When it comes to learning and growing in editing, I have to push myself in ways that range from irritating to excruciating. I have to apply different techniques, and learn new styles that may not come naturally to me. Sure, it’s uncomfortable at times, but just like stretching, I can see the benefits and it’s definitely worth it.
