MPR Class Notes | Expression in Music

Since 2014, we’ve worked with Classical Minnesota Public Radio on “Class Notes,” a video series designed as a tool for teachers to help inspire and educate children about classical music. This time around, they wanted to elevate things and we were excited for the challenge! After selecting a refreshed vector animated approach, we worked closely with them on writing and revising the scripts for a video covering Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Serenade No. 10, known as the “Gran Partita.”

The music is slow, elevated and sublime. However, animating to the creation of one of the most incredible composers the world has ever known is an undeniably challenging feat. Our solution was to not compete with the music, but to give it room to breathe. In order to not influence the listener’s imagination, we kept the visuals abstract and suggestive—leaving an impression of the world created by the lines of the oboe, clarinet, and the basset horn cutting through empty space.
