Pantone’s Polarizing Pick for Color of the Year

With 2016’s headaches and heartaches behind us, many of us are looking forward to a fresh start, and for a new Pantone color palette with which to blaze 2017’s artistic trail!  While some are anticipating 2017 to be full of change and hope, for others, it represents a feeling of nauseating nervousness. As polarized as the feelings get, so is Pantone’s 2017 Color of the Year. After spending nine intensive months researching and tasting the social and political air, Pantone selected its puke-green leaf color, Greenery (15-0343).

While Greenery for some is reminiscent of a green-screen or a night that is best forgotten, for others, it may just be the refreshing color we’ve been waiting for. At a time when daily life is modernized and individuals are glued to screens tucked behind walls, the “innate craving to immerse [our]selves in the physical beauty and inherent unity of the natural world” becomes more vital. This shift in longing for more reminders of the natural world in modern-day society comes from the idea of connecting mankind back to nature for balance and humility. Pantone, affirming its choice of Greenery, hopes to perpetuate “the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose” (pantone.com).

Foliage, wood grain and natural sunlight is already becoming prevalent in the interior and graphic design world. Still, this year’s color will be challenging many to expand their skills in working with such a vivacious green. Making this color appealing on the human body and to make it a color in vogue among trend-setters will be an especially arduous task for fashion designers. Lucky for them, Pantone’s palettes that complement Greenery are packed with many rich neutrals and metallics with touches of warm pink and teal hues.

Though Greenery may be the color our inner selves are crying out for, it may take time to adjust to its vibrancy and brash attitude. Regardless of how we may feel toward what 2017 may bring, Greenery will help us accept the terms with open, curious arms.
