Color Grading

More Efficient Color Sessions

WHAT CAN I DO TO MAKE A COLOR SESSION MORE EFFICIENT?

Some projects have very limited budgets leading many to believe that color correction is out of their range. However, if you come prepared for a color session, less time is
needed and it can be more affordable. Based on my experience, here are four things that can make a color session more efficient.

1.LIMIT THE TYPES OF CAMERAS:

When you mix different camera types it will take more time to match the different footage.  If you have the choice, stick to a single camera or camera type, as it will speed up your session.

2.PREP PROPERLY:

If timing on your project is locked, you can export a completed timeline minus any title or super work in ProRez 422HQ or 4444.  Then, I can do an “auto scene detect” to mark scenes. If it’s a project that has many dissolves, I can also use an EDL to do scene marking. We can use a CMX 3600 or an AAF. If you provide this, you save time on the prep and export, especially if it is a longer project.

3.DECIDE ON “THE LOOK” IN ADVANCE:

Spend time in advance of the color session thinking about what kind of ‘‘look” you would like your piece to have. Is it dark and moody, saturated and bright, or somewhere in between?  I’m always happy to review reference stills in advance of a color session as it greatly speeds up the process once we’re on the clock.

4. KNOW THE PROCESS:

Knowing what things take longer and what things are easier to accomplish allows you to get the biggest bang for your buck. For example, Primary Correction – which is the balancing of colors to make the blacks blacker and whites whiter, and setting the contrast – is fairly quick to accomplish. Sometimes, this is all that is needed to make a piece sparkle. However, other things take longer. For example, targeting a color or area, especially if it interacts with other parts of the picture, requires time to matt or track the item. Also, applying filters to create glows, film scratches, add grain, remove grain or remove noise in a scene will take time to render. Knowing these things ahead of time will give you a better sense of how long a color session might take.
